Arriving in the vibrant city of Kathmandu we have an opportunity to visit the largest stupa in the world; Boudhanath, a UNESCO world heritage site. We then take a 1hr flight to Tumlingtar in the Makalu region before enjoying lunch in Khadbari and travelling overland by jeep to the village of Num on the ridgeline of the Arun valley and gateway to the start of our hiking adventure.

Days 4 - 11

We spend the first day hiking through the lower Rai villages before ascending to the sizeable, and major regional Sherpa community of Seduwa. Lots of culturally interesting sites along the way and a great opportunity to meet and chat with local people. The entrance to the offical Makalu Barun national park is after Tashigoan where we stay on our 5th night. ‘Khongma La Pass’ is our first high crossing just under 4000m before crossing ‘Shipton La’ and ‘Keke la’, both over 4000m. Our final stage to base camp is following the Barun Nedi river as we pass several Yak grazing settlements to arrive at Makalu Basecamp (4870m), a truly incredible location. We enjoy a full day at BC exploring the Barun glacier and lakes at the base of Mount Makalu.

Days 12 - 17

Descending from MBC we reverse our journey for two days until reaching Khongma where we break of into the rarely visited, yet beautiful Isuwa Khola valley. A great opporutnity for us to gain a deeper insight into Sherpa culture with an opportunity to visit homesteads and see a very traditional way of life that remains unchanged for a little over 300yrs.

Days 18 - 20

As we cross the Arun Nadi river for the last time and hike up to the beautiful Rai settlement of Amrang we depart back to Khandbari. A short flight sees us back in Kathmandu and enjoying a well earned break relaxing in our chosen 4* Hotel.
