Arriving in the vibrant city of Kathmandu we have an opportunity to visit the largest stupa in the world; Boudhanath, a UNESCO world heritage site. We then take a 1hr flight to Tumlingtar in the Makalu region before enjoying lunch in Khadbari and travelling overland by jeep to the village of Num on the ridgeline of the Arun valley and gateway to the start of our hiking adventure.

Days 4 - 11

We spend the first day hiking through the lower Rai villages before ascending to the sizeable, and major regional Sherpa community of Seduwa. Lots of culturally interesting sites along the way and a great opportunity to meet and chat with local people. The entrance to the offical Makalu Barun national park is after Tashigoan where we stay on our 5th night. ‘Khongma La Pass’ is our first high crossing just under 4000m before crossing ‘Shipton La’ and ‘Keke la’, both over 4000m. Our final stage to base camp is following the Barun Nedi river as we pass several Yak grazing settlements to arrive at Makalu Basecamp (4870m), a truly incredible location. We enjoy a full day at BC exploring the Barun glacier and lakes at the base of Mount Makalu.
